MidPenn Legal Services was awarded a grant
from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to operate a Low-Income Taxpayer
Clinic (LITC) in our region. This service is in addition to what
MidPenn already provides to low-income families including: custody,
landlord-tenant, mortgage foreclosure, domestic violence, obtaining
debtor defense, public benefits such as Social Security Disability and
food stamps, unemployment compensation, and elderly law.
Unlike Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites which help
low-income families with their income tax filings, the MidPenn LITC provides free representation
for low-income tax payers who need legal assistance to resolve disputes
the IRS such as:
Helping clients in disputes with IRS audits, appeals
and collection matters
Preventing IRS collection in cases of financial
Helping taxpayers enter into reasonable payment
problems arising from identity theft
Innocent spouse cases
Services also include outreach and education to
taxpayers who speak English as a second language.
The Clinic does not provide tax return preparation.
