MidPenn Legal Services Opens Low-Income Tax-Payer Clinic

MidPenn Legal Services was recently awarded a grant from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to operate a Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) in our region. This service will be in addition to what MidPenn already provides to low-income families including: custody, landlord-tenant, mortgage foreclosure, domestic violence, obtaining health care, debtor defense, public benefits such as Social Security Disability and food stamps, unemployment compensation, and elderly law.

Taxpayer Clinic to Handle Disputes - Not a Tax Preparation Site

Unlike Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites which help low-income families with their income tax filings, the MidPenn LITC  will provide free representation for low-income tax payers who need legal assistance to resolve disputes with the IRS such as:

Helping clients in disputes with IRS audits, appeals and collection matters

Preventing IRS collection in cases of financial hardship

Helping taxpayers enter into reasonable payment agreements

Tax problems arising from identity theft

        Innocent spouse cases

Services will also include outreach and education to taxpayers who speak English as a second language.

Please check www.midpenn.org or call 844-675-7829 (1-844-MPLS-TAX) on or after January 30, 2015 to obtain services.
